A message from
Dr. Emma Eade
The potential power of motherhood first occurred to me in secondary school. My teacher asked the class of 14-year-olds how to change the beliefs and behaviours of a population. After a passionate philosophical conversation, she revealed that real change is actioned via the education of young girls who would grow up and become mothers. A mother’s beliefs on health, ethics, behaviour and more will influence her children in the most intrinsic and complete way. The power a mother holds is infinite and this carries an intense responsibility. I have never forgotten the effect that lesson had on me.
Fast forward 25 years, 3 children and 15 years of medical experience, I found myself in another situation that changed my destiny. A beloved friend invited me to a ‘celebration of mental health’ evening. That evening’s theme was the Japanese art of Kintsugi – repairing broken pottery with gold symbolizing the importance of embracing imperfection and creating something more beautiful after apparent destruction. This was a powerful evening for me. Whilst we practiced Kintsugi, a selection of young pioneers took the stage and raised awareness for mental health. I listened to these brave young people speaking candidly about their experiences and felt inspired. I was struck with the realisation that all the techniques they had developed to help their health and well-being, would never work for my patients who were parents. It is impossible to go for a run when you have a toddler at home. It is impossible to practice sleep hygiene when your baby is unwell and awake every hour. It is impossible to meditate when you have an energetic 3-year-old who wants to play. I realised that a mother’s well-being needs a completely different approach and the concept of ‘Maternal Wellness Ltd’ was born that evening.
I know the juggle and rollercoaster of motherhood first hand. I work as a GP in London and balance this with being a mother to 3 wonderful and energetic children. I love my job and I am excited to be able to combine my true passions – peri-natal care, mental health and preventative medicine with the hands-on experience of being a busy, working mum.
